Aesthetic Response

Unit: The Movement

Theme: Aesthetic Response

I

Introduction

The aesthetic response is based on an exercise I experienced at the European Graduate School. The dancer places him/herself in front of the art piece to embody the qualities of the piece and give it voice. In our class we will do the same to generate movement. The response will allow the dancer to find ways to express the voice of the art piece in dance.

II

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the aesthetic response process.
  • Explain the sensations generated as a result of the work
  • Gain awareness of the use of art to generate movement vocabulary
  • Experience solo improv when responding to the piece
  • Reflect on the creative process at the end of the process

Students' Work

Today was the first time I did an impromptu dance based on a drawing I made. It was especially interesting to see everyone create dances for the different ideas in their heads, and everyone's dances were special and fun. It was also a very rewarding experience and I learned that the first time it comes to mind is the scene I aspire to.

Lauryn Lee

I felt like i still did very flowy movements although they were inspired by a slightly different style. I didnt move my lower body a lot. It was enjoyable as i was reminded of another choreo i liked. I hope to do more in that style in the future.

the ability to first let me mind run and express its abstract thoughts before putting it into movements was tough for me, as i think i chose something emotional and personal and then it was harder for me to express it through action later. but because of that i think i poured alot more into my movements and it felt really good to get that out of my system somehow. the paper served as a starting point but did not dictate my movements so the improvisation from there was really abstract and i loved that

Danielle Levine

I liked drawing and then expressing that drawing through dance. It was cool to take something that I created on paper, and turn that into a dance. I get to express whatever is on my mind. I also enjoyed the activity we did in the beginning of class.

I felt like my drawing helped me express my movements while I improvised. I enjoyed it !!

In today's class i felt very warmed up in the beginning with our stretches. We then did a drawing activity that let us draw anything. I drew a road. I put this into improve by walking down a road and feeling peaceful.
Adaria Fennoy

I really enjoyed getting to make up my own choreography with my own freedom. I didn't have anything tying me down or specific things I had to incorporate, so I really got to show myself in my piece. I feel like I described wind and fire very well throughout my improv in class. I do a lot of my choreography like this so I really enjoyed class

Lauren Tedesco

I was very tired in the beginning of class but I enjoyed the drawing and dancing activity. My drawing was very easy for me to translate into dance moves.

Jordyn Solages

I thought it was very interesting to see how my drawing inspired my movements. I ended up drawing movements related to nature and I felt very connected to the wind and water movements. I also thought it was interesting to see how everyone interpreted their drawings with some people have larger movements and others having smaller ones.

Gabrielle Ramsamy

It felt good today as I felt that very connected to my inner child, my drawing was just random shapes that a kid drew overlapping. And I had fun making small movements based and I that. I learned that my dance styles like like spins and like simple movements like shapes so like circle squares lines that sort of stuff. I always felt a lot better as my leg i was able to move it a little more and actually dancing standing for small periods of time without it hurting.

Today I learned that I can embody my drawings and make them a dance expression. I have never done it before and it was fun!

Alejandra Hernandez

Today I felt more slippery on the floor. I had to focus on my control in order to not lose balance and fall. The reasoning behind my drawing was no reason at all.

I think today’s warm up could really entire our together . And the dancing part is really interesting and creatively for us to drawing picture. It could allow us be more creative of thinking and movements.

Katerina Molina

I today's class I realized that what I was able to portray on paper was easily transferable to bodily movements and I was able to tell a story.

Yiyun Yang

I think this activity is very interesting. Everyone can use their unique imagination to create paintings, and used movements to respond and shared with each other. I really enjoyed it!

This activity was very fun for me because while I am no artist I could explore more abstract dance outside of any genre I’ve danced before. I loved watching others do the same! It shows how we can make new movements from our imagination.

  1. The video showing the connection between dance and art was captivating. It demonstrated how dancers could interpret the emotions evoked by each painting and then convey them through their movements. It's intriguing to witness how they translate visual art into a physical form, capturing and sharing the essence of the painting. This approach reveals the synergy between different art forms, where visual and performing arts converge to create a unique and engaging experience.
  2. The essence of art is to evoke emotions, communicate those feelings, and share them with an audience. This process establishes a profound connection with the observer, allowing them to engage with the work on a deeper level. By evoking emotional responses, art can bridge gaps between different experiences and foster a sense of shared understanding. Whether through visual arts, dance, or other creative expressions, art creates a space for meaningful communication, enabling artists to connect with their audience and share their perspectives.

1. the dancing to art video was interesting to see how they expressed each painting. You can see the emotion the painting gave to them and then they express it through art. It's fascinating to see the way they dance to the art.

2. the point of art is to create emotions, communicate them and share them to an audience. It creates a deep connection with the observer.

The piece of art I chose was the water jug from the Mediterranean art section. The jar brings to mind peace. The jar was most likely used for a family to hold water. The jar provides a solution to the unrest of thirst. And hopefully had provided this solution to the families that had used it eons ago.
